Gingival gum tissue is pink and dense when viewed under a microscope. When the gums are healthy, they form a tight seal around the teeth to prevent the penetration of bacteria. Bacteria are dangerous for the bone when it gets under the gum line.

The recession of gingival tissue due to gingivitis or gum disease allows infection and trauma to affect the gums, teeth, and jawbone. A minor recession of the gums is when some healthy gingival remains intact and continues to protect the tooth. After gum disease progresses, the bone that supports the teeth can deteriorate and eventually lead to teeth loss.

Gum grafting can be done to restore gums to good health and prevent future tooth loss. Gum grafting is usually done in combination with other treatments, including dental fillings, dental crowns, antibiotics, and other treatments. The extent of treatment will be based on the individual's extent of gingival problems.  More severe gum recession will require more extensive gum grafting treatments.

The gum grafting procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes and stitches are removed about one week later. This process eliminates the inflammation and exposed roots are sometimes covered with a graft placed directly over the site.

Gum grafting benefits include a reduction in tooth sensitivity, prevention of erosion, restoration of the gums, prevention of any further recession, and safety and longevity for the teeth themselves.  The cost of gum grafting is dependent on many different factors. Dental insurance usually covers gum-grafting costs.

Patients interested in cosmetic gum contouring, a treatment that balances and improves the shape of the gums, usually have to pay for costs out of pocket. Cosmetic gum contouring is considered an elective procedure when performed for aesthetic rather than health reasons.
